Rich Howell: Be a part of the solution

Like many Americans, I’m none too thrilled with the current presidential campaign.

Personalities aside, it seems obvious that both candidates represent failed economic philosophies. One candidate wants us to believe that he can restore past glory — or economic security — by cutting taxes for the wealthy who, as the old story goes, will invest the money and create wealth for all. The other seeks to tax the rich to benefit the poor and displaced. Both are mid-20th century philosophies which simply don’t work as advertised.

The rich are getting richer. The poor are getting poorer. That’s fact.

We are no longer an industrial society. The “good jobs” have been eroded by technology and outsourcing offshore. We need candidates who understand 21st century realities and can articulate forward-thinking solutions and a whole new value set right down to the family level. Minds and hearts must be changed. Failed philosophies of the past must be abandoned in favor of a new definition of what it means to earn and contribute.

Political change follows social change. Be a part of the solution.
