Ray Bryars: Put tobacco money to intended use

I was pleased to see the article regarding “tobacco money.” It is way past time for this money to be put to its intended use. For many years I have asked people why the county’s Public Health Department has not received adequate funding for tobacco education and cessation programs. It was as if I’d asked them to touch the third rail. I sensed that there was a fear that jobs would be lost if there was even a hint that there was a better, more correct use for the money than the “general fund.”

It’s time to make up for all the past years of inappropriate use by funding a significant number of health department/community approved programs. I applaud Jill Blake for stepping up to make campuses smoke free. We need to further support this with county/community actions:

— Encourage local businesses to stop selling tobacco products. CVS and Raleys are on board with this.

— Promote and fund more tobacco cessation programs.

— Support City no smoking enforcement programs.

— Fund more no smoking programs in schools

— Educate apartment managers/tenants regarding their rights to live in a smoke free environment.

Let’s get the county and the community together to develop some long-term plans.
