Ralph Hitchcock: Don’t call it Gracie Canal Ditch

In a July 13 story in The Union, a reporter used the term “Gracie Canal Ditch.” This 130-year-old ditch has never been called that until the last few years when so many more people discovered what a great walk it is.

Until NID sees fit to change the name, it is the Lower Cascade Canal!

The Union prides itself on its Nevada County history. We now live where the majority of the people do not know any local history or even care that much. That is why it is very important for The Union to set an example and not use names coined by people who don’t know our history. Not to take away from my main point, but also the Glenbrook Basin should never be called the Brunswick Basin.

I know it’s a losing battle, but The Union at least should not be adding to the problem.
