Paul Berger: Tax fairness is the real issue

In his recent commentary, Marc Cuniberti writes about the prevalence of taxes, which he deplores. My god, he says, we are taxed on everything!

Throughout his rant, Cuniberti avoids any discussion of what taxes pay for — things like police and fire protection, preserving clean air and water, food inspection, community health services. Taxes pay for the defense of our nation and for rooting out terrorists in our homeland. Tax money ensures that the roads and bridges you travel on are safe and well-maintained. Taxes pay for unemployment benefits, for caring for our veterans and educating our kids.

The real question is not whether we should pay taxes. It’s who should bear the burden of these taxes to maintain the quality of life we all desire. Is it fair that 26 of the nation’s largest corporations paid no income tax last year while reaping record profits and sheltering their cash overseas? Is it equitable that a billionaire gets to deduct the mortgage interest on a second vacation home? Or that a secretary pays tax at a higher rate than the corporate executive for whom she works?

Taxes are not the issue we should be worried about. Tax fairness is.
