Patricia Black: The monster is us

In all the attempts to deal with American gun violence, nobody has mentioned the primary role model — our own government.

Except for the two major wars, our military actions have been against smaller, poorer, weaker countries that are no match for us. They are bad-mouthed in the media until enough Americans accept the necessity of military action against them, and in we go. We bomb anywhere we choose, any group of people spotted by a drone, wedding parties, now hospitals. They’re all terrorists.

Who is the terrorist? We boast of freedom and democracy, but our actions breed terrorists wherever we go. Leaders addicted to military action against anyone unlike us serve as an example of how to handle things.

The poor souls who shoot up school rooms and holiday parties are a mirror of what we have become. It takes more than laws to change it.
