Nevada City seniors get eviction notice at Christmas

"Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus," but for senior citizens living in a senior complex for active seniors, there is a Scrooge as well.

People in their 70s and 80s in Nevada City received an early "Christmas present" from the manager — eviction notices on Dec. 10, through no fault of their own. It appears the manager demands change.

These elders now must search for new homes on fixed incomes and pensions. In truth, most have no place to go.

As residents of Nevada County know, rentals are hard, if not impossible to find. Indeed, the energy to pack, hire somebody to haul and move, emotional trauma (sure to occur) must overwhelm and frighten these people. I find the whole idea of "throwing people out in the cold" shameful and cruel. I'm disgusted even more because these residents were told not two months ago that they could "stay as long as they wanted."

This treatment of elders should not happen anywhere in the United States, but especially at Christmas, and in Nevada County?

Yes, I think that manager deserves the name of Scrooge.
