National Zoo should not support Have Trunk Will Travel

Given the hideous history of Have Trunk Will Travel, I thought at first I was reading The Onion when I saw a letter from a National Zoo spokesperson supporting this outfit.

It’s in the public record that most of the elephants provided by HTWT were captured in the wild, and HTWT has sold at least two elephants to a traveling circus. A baby elephant with this traveling show died of the painful herpes virus — that’s the reason they are “interested” in the disease. It’s certainly not altruistic!

So is the National Zoo is support of chaining elephants in reeking, stifling tractor trailers, hauling them around the country and hitting elephants with sharp bullhooks? For shame.
