Supervisors made the right decision

It was evident at the Jan. 12 supervisors’ meeting that the increased amount of growing and use of marijuana has adversely affected our lives in Nevada County. George Boardman’s column referred to Sheriff Royal’s comprehensive presentation as a “dog and pony show.”

On the contrary, many came out of the meeting frustrated and angry about the huge amount of money taxpayers are spending on lawless and unacceptable behavior that is draining resources from law enforcement and many county agencies. The marijuana industry in Nevada County is about much more than providing medicinal marijuana. For growers living outside the law, it is all about making money — with no concern for their neighbors, environment, wildlife, water theft, poisons, and the associated alarming increase in criminal behavior. The most devastating testimony was how the marijuana culture is negatively affecting our most important resource, our children.

The emergency ordinance bans outdoor grows, yet allows growing 12 plants indoors for medicinal use. The money brought in by this “industry” does not offset the costs incurred and the long-term deterioration of our lifestyle, culture and environment. On June 7 voters can decide what kind of county we want to live in and raise our children.
