Mike Smith: Critical decisions for our climate

If you do not believe in man-made climate change or think it will not affect you, please skip to the last paragraph; for everyone else:

We will have clear choices in November. Besides the important presidential selection, we have a chance here in the north state to significantly enhance the conversation on climate change. We can do this at both the national level and in California.

The incumbents for both the House of Representatives and the California Senate have generally stayed out of the debate. When they have spoken at all, it has been to deny that climate change is a man-made problem or to complain about the possibility of additional regulations. These incumbents are challenged this year by candidates who understand the science and are ready, if elected, to move towards effective solutions.

Incumbent Congressman Doug LaMalfa is being challenged by Jim Reed. In the State Senate, incumbent Ted Gaines is being challenged by Rob Rowen.

If you consider climate change to be a critical problem, selecting the two challengers — Reed and Rowen — is a positive step in that direction. For more information, I suggest reading, “Climate Change — What Everyone Needs to Know.”
