Mike Smith: Bogus reference

In Mr. Wright’s letter to the editor (titled “The Next Ice Age”) on Oct. 27, he refers to the Global Warming Petition Project — and uses this to support his claim that climate change is not man-made.

The Petition Project has been recycling for years. It was started to encourage the U.S. to reject the 1997 Kyoto climate change agreement. Of the 31,000 claimed signers, less than 0.5 percent, according to the Huffington Post, have a degree related to atmospheric studies (a claim of a bachelor’s degree in one of several broad fields is sufficient to be listed as a “scientist”).

The vast majority of knowledgeable scientists in the climate field point to man-made causes of climate change. Statements such as Mr. Wright’s create unnecessary — and dangerous — confusion and delay the corrective actions.
