Michele Spencer: Whose sad commentary?

Submitted to The Union

In reply to Sue Jeffrey’s rebuttal to my Aug. 22 opinion piece: It was not intended to devalue human life but rather to support it.

First: The Constitution mandates tolerance of different religious and moral values and practices including the right to privacy.

Second: One in three women in this country have had abortions, most of whom were married with children at the time, and most of whom do not regret the choice. Most fear that public disclosure would bring them harm and so they remain silent. Your piece supports their concerns.

Third: The rights of U.S. citizenship exist for persons actually born in this country and not to the “unborn.”

Fourth, I revealed my religious background to indicate my understanding, appreciation and support of a person’s right to be morally opposed to abortion. It was not intended to disrespect or challenge church doctrine rather to reveal that many people from that and similar backgrounds are pro-choice.

Fifth, Planned Parenthood has long discretely provided contraception, sex education and women’s health services. It has functioned to prevent rather than promote abortions. None of the federal funds they receive go to pay for an abortion procedure. None of us are paying for abortions with our taxes.
