Lock Richards: What’s wrong with this picture?

While I do not condone the alleged actions of Nikko Wu, owner of the Stonehouse, as recently reported in The Union, I must say that something seems terribly distorted about this whole situation.

Six different governmental agencies — the FBI, ABC, EDD, FTB, BoE and City of Nevada City — all involved in a year-long investigation and front-page arrest centered around alleged employment tax violations.

If she knowingly broke the law, then she deserves whatever punishment is coming; but how can so many public resources be used and spent to pursue a person who has worked so tirelessly to bring jobs, vibrancy and economic growth to this community, while at the same time we are surrounded by folks breaking the law, making it rich and paying no taxes whatsoever on the marijuana trade?

Ironically, as I write this I can see and smell an ongoing commercial-size trimming and harvesting operation, the product of which I know will not be used medicinally and the result of which will ultimately lead to less jobs and vibrancy, with benefits solely to the growers’ pocketbooks.

Why such a seemingly disproportionate all-out effort against someone working hard and adding value to the community, while literally hundreds of others are illegally striking it rich and paying zero taxes, let alone employment taxes?
