Kurt Lorenz: Sales tax would help

Kurt Lorenz

My wife and I live on the San Juan Ridge, and conversations up here sound like this.

“Hi. How you guys doing?”

“Oh. Pretty good. At least we haven’t burned up, yet.”

It’s almost impossible to talk to anyone here without fire being the main topic. And the number one subtext is escape routes overgrown with fuel and dead trees.

Measure V is a well thought out ½ cent sales tax for ten years to help the county really get a handle on the flammable jungle along our roads, and to help out senior and disabled folks with defensible space around their homes, and other fire safety issues.

The funds gathered would be kept separate from regular County money and could not be used for other purposes. An expert committee of fire and emergency personnel will be appointed to hire the contractors to do the work and the whole operation will be audited every year and all records published on a County website so the public can be sure of transparency and competent management. This is a great plan and long overdue. Vote YES on Measure V!
