Kristin Liljequist: Issues with Israel

After Netanyahu’s speech to Congress I overheard someone say, “In the spirit of reciprocity, President Obama should now speak to the Israeli Knesset about the need for Israel to stop building illegal settlements on Palestinian Land.”

Exactly. He might also mention that continuing to do so, in spite of the condemnation of virtually the entire world, will jeopardize the $8 million per day ($3 billion per year) the U.S. sends to the Israeli military.

In the midst of the issue of Iran developing nuclear weapons, he might also mention that Israel has nuclear weapons, has not been forthcoming about them, and has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In 1986, a technician at the Dimona Facility in Israel gave photographs of the facility to a British newspaper. Analysts estimated that Israel had the world’s sixth largest arsenal.

I find it alarming that a government so contemptuous of international law regarding the blatant theft of land from another nation and collective punishment of civilian populations, has a large arsenal of nuclear weapons. I find it sickening that we send an excessive amount of money to a government that, at regular intervals, ferociously bombs a completely trapped civilian population, with huge death tolls.
