Karen Lilly: Incentive for teachers always there; we care

Dear Dick Phillips and others who may believe the same way (regarding your letter to the editor):

Let me disabuse you of several notions about teacher tenure. My qualifications: I was a teacher for 29 years in California, a mentor teacher, and served in quasi-administrative positions. I loved my jobs, and I can’t see ignorance without trying to educate.

There is a procedure in place to properly fire teachers who are not qualified. Administration has to document and follow through. I’ve seen it done, but it requires diligence on the part of administration. Thus, good teachers are protected from political maneuverings and manipulation. Many folk who want to be teachers don’t make it into the classroom because their mentors have helped them exit out of education.

Secondly, good teachers always care. Most of us consider teaching to be an art, and what we do is our calling. The incentive is always there because we care. If we didn’t, we’d opt for more respected jobs with more money. We are self-motivated.

Mr. Phillips, I challenge you to go into a classroom for a day or a week, just to observe. My bet is that you will change your opinion.
