Judy Olson: Handing out food is enabling

Recently, Mr. Robert Marbut, a guest speaker at a forum regarding homelessness, stated that handing out food is enabling. He is exactly right.

Per my Merriam-Webster … “Enable vt B. to make possible.”

Food handouts make it possible for the recipients of those sandwiches and hot meals to be able to fulfill their need for nourishment. Becoming nourished then enables them to be able to function better in order to pursue other avenues of assistance on what can sometimes be a long and arduous journey out of homelessness.

To those who are doing the handouts, many thanks, as you continue to help keep those tummies full!

Additionally, there is only so much that the dedicated folks in the communities can do. We need to hear from the “powers that be,” governing our cities, towns and the county.
