Joyce Wycoff: Sanders will continue to shape election

Who won the first Democratic debate? Traditional media says that Hillary won, but Bernie did well. However, we, the people, seem to have a different opinion which the traditionalists haven’t explained. Informal, unscientific polls show Bernie winning by a landslide … (for example: CNN Politics – Sanders at 83 percent versus Clinton at 12 percent.)

What they don’t talk about is: Bernie has already won. Call it “the Bernie effect.” The debate focused on his agenda (income equality, education, our justice system, the economy and jobs, and climate change as a security issue as well as a-future-of-our planet issue.) Bernie is changing the political financing model, refusing to go negative or talk about the Donald’s hair or Hillary’s email.

He is showing us how to fix a broken political system.

A few short months ago, the idea of Bernie Sanders running for president was laughable. The media ignored him until huge numbers of people started showing up at his rallies and real money (in small amounts from lots of people) started flowing into his campaign. They mostly focused on Hillary after the debate, dismissing him.

My prediction is that, as the Bernie effect continues to shape this election, mainstream media will eventually stop ignoring him.
