John Deam: Freedom of speech

George, George, George! I’ve enjoyed your column (George Boardman — every Monday) for years and know that you’re a pretty smart guy. That’s why I was so surprised by Monday’s opinion about “… threat to freedom of speech …” You need to rethink the first 10 amendments to our Constitution. They all address limiting government’s power over fellow citizens. Government is the only entity with coercive power over people (they can fine you or put you in jail). Facebook, Google, et al., are private enterprises that you can read or not read — your choice; they’re not going to disrupt your life. If they decide that something is not in their best interest, they have every right to remove it from their site. If enough people (even crazy people) want to read outlandish trash, a free market will eventually find a way to meet that desire.
