Joanne Drummond: Taking critical steps in preparation for wildfire

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That’s why local Fire Safe Councils and the Pacific Gas and Electric Company are working together to protect public safety and enhance emergency preparedness by reducing the threat of wildfires.

The public-private partnership has accomplished a lot. Over the past two years, PG&E has provided more than $7 million to dozens of local Fire Safe Councils for fuel reduction, emergency access and defensible space projects.

Here in Nevada County, PG&E provided $50,000 to the Fire Safe Council for fuel reduction, hazard tree removal and defensible space projects. Many trees are dead or dying from drought and bark beetle infestation.

We know California is facing one of the worst droughts in modern history. California fire season can last year-round. Californians must remain vigilant.

We can all take simple, but critical steps to prepare for wildfire.

Protect your home and prepare your family by creating defensible space, a wildfire action plan and emergency supply kit.
