Jan Westmore: A carefully placed dispensary can provide medical need, protect community

It appears that our city council is moving forward toward a medical cannabis dispensary in Nevada City.

I don’t think anyone in the community wishes to deprive patients of their doctor prescribed medications. The decision should focus on reasonable, safe access and not make our town a magnet for out of town prescription requests or recreational users. The trimmers, growers and downtown pot smokers already create enough problems in this county.

We can meet medical needs and protect our community if we carefully consider where this one outlet should be placed. The obvious answer is either in a medical facility or in a pharmacy. This would be sure to limit the sales to only medical patients with valid prescriptions from our local physicians. We definitely do not ever want to become a haven for outsiders coming to our community merely to obtain marijuana in any form. We don’t even have the police force today to control smoking cigarettes, let alone pot in downtown, both of which are illegal there.

This should not be a rush for monetary gain. The only reason to have a cannabis dispensary here is to meet the medical needs of our local patients.
