Jacqueline Turner: Mentors for life

The elderly lady who sips on her coffee and waits for her mate in her beautiful white dress, yet no one shows up.

The child searching for a heart that could love him unconditionally.

A homeless man in Pioneer Park who hasn’t been touched in weeks. Everywhere I go I see people.

You look into their faces and see the beauty beyond their eyes. They all seem to have that same look, of being lost and needing someone to come alongside of them. The thing is, it is not hard to do.

Sometimes people need people who will be a mentor to them, not for a couple of weeks only but for life. You see sometimes the people around us have nobody. They walk around us. They sit with us in college classes; they are our coworkers. Yet we have never seen the truth behind their smiles. They are alone, in needing of comfort, a refuge, of wisdom gleaned over the years. They need you.

Yes the people of Nevada County needs us to be there. The people in Pioneer Park need someone who will give them hugs, will bring them food. The children of Sierra Forever Families, need forever families. The people at your work may need a listening ear. The child who has no backpack for school might need a ride for him and his parents to get to Salvation Army.

People need each other. The people all around us need what we have to offer. Some people don’t have families. It is just them year after year facing holidays alone; invite them to spend holidays with you.

At some point we have to care or stop talking about caring for others. Action many times is louder than words.
