Jacqueline Finley: Is this what we deserve?

My late mother-in-law used to say we get the government we deserve. While she and I stood on opposite sides of the political fence, to some extent I agree.

She was a staunch conservative Republican; I am not.

If she were still alive, we’d acknowledge that we would probably not see eye-to-eye on how this country should best move forward.

We both, however, believed in dignity, truthfulness and competency from our political leaders, something we’re not getting from the current administration. Profanity-laced diatribes, pompous touts of self-grandiosity, and a knee-jerk need to pit Americans against Americans in order to achieve personal power are, at best, unseemly in a president, and at worst, an indication to both the U.S. and the world that we’re allowing an ill-formed child to steer this country into a dismal future.

Is this what we deserve? I hope not. We’re a country with an illustrious history that needs revisiting and appreciation if we, as a great nation, are to resume a position of respect and prudent leadership.

If we voluntarily re-elect our current president in 2020, clearly aware of his behavior and how he abuses allies and foes alike, we’ll truly deserve what we get.
