Jackie Wapp: We are Lions; we serve

Let’s talk about Lions. Lions are the world’s largest service organization. Their motto is “We serve” and we are “the knights of the blind.”

In the spirit of this we will be having a day of vision screening at Pioneer Park 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 18. The Northern California Lions Sight Association (NCLSA) sight van will be here and with the help of Dr. Layne Christiansen we will conduct vision tests and glaucoma tests. These will be free and refreshments will be available.

I am a Nevada City Lion. The president of our club. We are here to help and serve our community. We do road cleanups. We help people in need with eye exams and glasses. We donate money to many local organizations including Kare Crisis Nursery, Women of Worth, and juvenile hall. We help local and beyond.

Nevada City Lions are also big sponsors of Pioneer Park. We provided the playground structure, the truck, the barbecue’s down below, the basketball courts and more. In January, we worked together with Gold Country Kiwanis, Nevada City parks and the Soapbox Derby funds to put in the new giant slide.

I’m a Lion. I serve.

I love our little hamlet! Beautiful scenery, fun festivals, etc., but there is something lacking — especially in some of our citizens who believe it is their right to verbally abuse others. We all would…
