J. Martin Corey: Cost of illegal immigration after fact-checking

I read with interest the letter submitted by Dan Bartlett. Referring to illegal immigrants, he said, “Sixty percent will end up on welfare rolls.” That didn’t meet the smell test for me. Dan suggested readers go to the Federation for Immigration Reform (FAIR) website, and then do the math. So I did. I thumbed through the FAIR report. The CATO Institute, a highly respected conservative think-tank, says:

“FAIR’s Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration study is fatally flawed. It concocts (sic) a method of estimating the fiscal costs that is rejected by all economists who work on this subject.”

Here’s what the Southern Poverty Law Center had to say:

“By defending racism, encouraging xenophobia and nativism, and giving its all to efforts to keep America white, FAIR has more than earned its place in the pantheon of hate groups.”

Google John Tanton, FAIR’s founder. It’s an eye-opener.

I’m a Republican. I own guns and support limited government. I do not believe in open borders. Legal immigration is good for our country. It keeps us competitive and it’s consistent with our national creed. I encourage my fellow Republicans to rid their hearts of hate and fear. Remember the Golden Rule (Matt. 7:12).
