Heidi Powell: No diapers required at Memorial Park pool?

Memorial Park Pool does not require swim diapers for babies or toddlers coming with their parents to swim, so consequently this pool has had to close down due to poor water quality five times in the past six weeks.

In other words, a toddler or baby has urinated or defecated in the swimming pool. You might think that this is no big deal, but it impacts two local children’s swim clubs that are not allowed to swim on those days due to poor water quality. The parents of the children in the Orca Swim Club and Northern Sierra Aquatics who pay for their children to learn to swim are being shortchanged, as are their kids. This is not fair, especially when it is an easy fix. Every pool in other towns where these clubs have swam have signs posted that swim diapers are required in order to use the pool.

So far, several parents have called Grass Valley Public Works to voice their displeasure of this situation, but that office just laughed it off. I have sent two emails to the Grass Valley Parks and Recreation Department, seeking some sort of response to at least address the problem, but I have not received any response. I guess it’s low on their agenda, or maybe they are just waiting for summer to be over; then they don’t have to do anything! Maybe if it affected their children, they might think differently.

I love our little hamlet! Beautiful scenery, fun festivals, etc., but there is something lacking — especially in some of our citizens who believe it is their right to verbally abuse others. We all would…
