George Lawton: Remembering Gretchen Serrata

It has been a year since she left us and I continue to find endless encouragement in my memories of Gretchen Serrata. I suspect countless others were likewise touched by their relationship with this wonderful lady.

To put it simply, Gretchen was one of the most caring people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.

This may sound familiar to some. Gretchen would always ask how my daughters and I were doing. She truly cared. Then, when I asked about her and her family she would speak with enthusiasm about her beloved family. However about herself, although she may have been battling debilitating illness, well, she was always doing just fine.

Gretchen was also smart and genuine, a skilled communicator, and a dedicated advocate and public servant who faced her adversity with courage and grace. Gretchen’s passing was a loss most strongly felt by those of us who knew her, but to our whole community as well.

My belated condolences to Gretchen’s beloved family, her soulmate Andy, and to anyone who had the good fortune to have had Gretchen as a friend.
