Donn Coenen: Yes on Measure V — here’s why

I would like to share my family’s experience with the Higgins Fire Department. My three children were paid volunteers and trained responders, on for nine years. I am very proud that my children had the opportunity to experience the sense of community that came with the job.

We live three miles from Station 21. Many times a call would come in that was in our area. Instead of going to the station they went straight to the call where they would be the first responders. This was a huge responsibility for young people just out of high school. Thanks to the training they received at Higgins they were confident they could handle the emergency whether it was fire, medical or traffic accident.

Many of our young people have trained as first responders and EMTs. As they leave they still have the knowledge to take control of emergency situations.

As a retired person on a fixed income, I’m not happy about an increase in the fire tax. Remember, the state takes $150 and provides nothing in return. But I have personally seen the benefit to our community and to our young people of the Higgins Fire Department.

Yes on Measure V.
