Craig Steiger: Behold the bicycle

I found Mr. Stahler’s contrast (The Union, May 12) — in terms of physics — between the bicycle and automobile very informative. I was surprised to read that in this era of oversized SUVs and SuperDuty trucks that over 90 percent of the fuel consumed goes simply to propel the vehicle, and only a slight amount the driver! I understand the human need for ostentation and displays of wealth, but this seems a bit excessive to me.

The bicycle is almost the exact reverse of this — most of its energy going to propel the rider. Perhaps this is an unheralded gem of technology: that instead of viewing time and space as adversaries, as does the automobile, it also invites the rider to appreciate nuances of the countryside instead of glossing them.
