Craig Ashcraft: Annual Rough and Ready festivities a success

Ten chili chefs and hundreds of chili fans journeyed to Rough and Ready recently to enjoy the 62nd Secession Days Celebration and Chili Cook-off.

David Chase of “The Chili Is My Favorite Flavor!” team, a first time entrant from Wilton, Calif., claimed the $500 first prize and the $250 People’s Choice award … both graciously provided by the Animal Clinics of Rough and Ready and Penn Valley.

Monte Downing of Grass Valley took home the second place $250 prize for his “Mondog’s Chili.”

Thank you to all the chili cookers who prepared their favorite chili: Jason Gordon, Larry Smith, Gary Evans, David Warnhoff, Rob McDonald, Terry Gannon, Dixie Lacey, Charlene Turner and the Rough and Ready Fire Department.

On behalf of the Rough and Ready Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the event, we would also like to thank the judges, Hank Weston, Mary Ellen Sorci, Cathy Whittlesey, Larry Balsley and Sayra Loungway; our resident blacksmith, Michael Smallwood, and guest blacksmiths Hal Davis and Cal Swanson; photographer, Theresa Hukill-DeRock; the Fruit Jar Pickers for providing musical entertainment; the Rough and Ready volunteer firefighters and all the Chamber volunteers who worked so tirelessly to make our event such a success.
