Chellie Peterson: Thank you, Marie Johnson, for your spirit of kindness

I’m a 43-year downtown Grass Valley furniture merchant who had a sad conversation recently about the decline of human kindness.

Today was St. Patrick’s Day and it dawned on me that we probably wouldn’t see Marie Johnson today. She had taken a fall and broken several bones and her 44-year tradition of green carnations for the downtown lady merchants had probably come to an end.

But, around 11 a.m., my office manager came running into my office and said “Marie is here.” She was using a walker and couldn’t get too far into the store, but I grabbed my son because I wanted him to witness a special moment. She always says “this is in memory of your mother” who was a friend of hers and who passed 22 years ago. It always chokes me up, but Marie’s spirit of kindness touches us all and gives us hope that the decline of humanity may actually be on hold.

So in tribute to all the kind Irish ladies in my life, Kathryn McCullough, Karen Sheahan and Mary Murray — there is hope still and thank you, Marie Johnson and Foothill Flowers for reminding us!
