Carol Alexander: Cyclists need to take some responsibility

For the second time in just two months, I almost hit a bicycle rider.

It’s hard to admit that I was just seconds away from taking someone’s life or at least causing great bodily injury.

The lawyers and judges have made it easier for you, the bicycle rider, to get more enjoyment out of your ride. Helmets and safety gear have made you safer, bikes are sturdier, lighter, and more comfortable. However, some of the bicycle riders seem to get more stupid each day. Even though we, the vehicle drivers, must now provide a 3-foot clearance when we pass, some cyclists still insist on riding down the center of the roadway, riding on roads that were never meant to accommodate a 2,000-pound vehicle and a 20-pound bike in the same lane with no shoulder, and failing to stop at stop signs intended to improve safety for all of us.

The corner of Mount Olive Road and Lower Colfax Road is an accident ready for an ambulance if you, the bicycle rider, do not begin stopping at this stop sign. I’m tired of having to pull out into the opposite lane in order to avoid your stupidity. Maybe we need some law enforcement here to help protect you from yourselves.

I’m sending this letter in for publication hoping that the two gentlemen cyclists who ran the stop sign two months ago, and the woman cyclist who ran the same stop sign today, read The Union. However, if they can’t read the “STOP” sign, I really doubt that they can read at all.
