Bob Branstrom: It’s democracy

Sue Jeffrey recently wrote about abortion in these pages. She asked a very important question: “Please tell me what it is, if it isn’t government overreach, when those who morally and religiously oppose the killing of an unborn child are forced to pay for that procedure?”

I’m happy to answer her question. It’s democracy. Our government, through our elected representatives, allows federal tax dollars to be spent on abortion, but only in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.

In a democracy we don’t always get our way. We don’t get to pick and choose where our tax dollars go. I do sympathize. I personally oppose the many unnecessary wars our country has engaged in during my lifetime, with loss of life (including that of many children) far exceeding the lost fetuses with which she is concerned.

But, as citizens, we all have to pay for things we disagree with. That’s democracy.
