Bill Convis: Competing with TV, social media and the Internet

Great column on Oct. 2 by The Union’s publisher Jim Hemig entitled, “Who will take up our legacy?”

I am the Exalted Ruler at the Grass Valley Elks Lodge and I can’t agree with you more. I am 56 years old, still work full time and am able to find time to devote many volunteer hours a week to the great cause that is the Elks. In the good-ol’ days, our lodge had almost 500 members. Now we are down to around 130.

So many great people who have helped build Grass Valley were members of our lodge. Now, many of our members are in their 80s and just can’t put in the time like they used to. It is such a challenge to compete with social media, the Internet and 500 channels on the TV. We have such an historic building with three bars, two pool tables, a full dining room and kitchen — and the only spring-loaded dance floor west of the Mississippi.

My challenge as the Exalted Ruler at our Elks Lodge is to figure out how to reach out to our younger people in the community and show them the value of fraternal organizations, volunteering for your community, and social interaction at a people to people level. This is worth fighting for! Thank you for such a well-written column.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
