Betsy Hunter: Can’t afford to get sick

My 33-year-old daughter, a single mother of an 11 year old, doesn’t have health insurance because it’s too expensive (approximately $700 every other week at her workplace, and not much different with national health care).

She has fragile health, being born with seven major birth defects including half of one arm missing, therefore she must be diligent with any bug that comes her way.

Yes, she recently caught a bug and was compelled to go to a local well-known urgent care center, which in turn, not only prescribed medication in the amount of $500 — which she couldn’t afford, therefore didn’t get — but also sent her to our local hospital.

They kept her approximately five hours and performed a test on her in addition to an IV. Most of the time was waiting. Lo and behold, the hospital bill came. Are you ready for this? It was more than $10,000!

My daughter would not be able to pay this in a lifetime, even though she is a remarkably responsible person. She can work circles around most able-bodied people.

When you’re sick and you can’t afford health care, but seek medical help, expect the worst “thank you” notice from our local health care system, as they have proven to be merciless and money hungry.
