Ann Shulse: Nevada Union football team serves Nevada County community

The Nevada Union High School football department is to be applauded for the community service component they have in place for their football players.

Our county branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently put on a fundraising event for local scholarships, and we needed “muscle” to help us set up and dismantle the heavy stage at Northstar House. Over the course of two days, seven young men showed up to muscle and jockey the stage for us.

We are very impressed with the community service component of the NU football program. These young men are learning valuable character-building skills both on and off the field that will carry into their adult lives and hopefully encourage them to always be contributing members of society. A hearty thank you to Dennis Houlihan and the rest of the NU football coaching team for the work you do with these emerging adults. Seven of your guys answered the call of community service.

We thank you for creating this opportunity for them to be of service to the greater whole, and we thank the young men for showing up and helping us out.
