Anita Wald-Tuttle: Students can ‘opt out’ of military list

Although it still feels like summer, school is back in session beginning Aug. 17, and once again, the Grandmothers for Peace of Nevada County will be out on the sidewalk in front of Nevada Union High School to bring awareness to “Opt-Out Forms” and the need to turn them in as soon as possible.

What are “Opt-Out Forms?” Even though these forms are part of the student packets, many parents overlook them because they are listed as “optional,” and when there are so many mandatory items to pay attention to these can be overlooked. This applies to all high school students in our area, no matter which of the high schools they attend. The Opt-Out forms need to be filled out and returned to the school office in order to ensure that the student’s contact information is removed from the list before it is turned over to the military recruiters. Grandmothers for Peace will be out in front of Nevada Union High School on Aug. 18-19, handing out the forms and raising awareness.

If anyone is interested in joining the military, there are recruiting offices here locally and recruiters can be contacted by the interested party. Local peace organizations are working to make sure students are aware of other options available to them after high school and that they aren’t pressured into committing into a contract by the military.

Sandy Devine: Freedom at others’ expense

Our actions have consequences, sometimes unintended. There are people demanding the freedom to be unvaccinated and unmasked for themselves and their children in public places, including restaurants, stores, theaters and schools. I presume these folks…
