54 valedictorians? Really?

Sherry Chargin (Letters, May 22) undermines her argument for traditional schools when she reports that Nevada Union has 54 valedictorians this year.

Fifty-four! Really? There was only one in my high school graduating class, but an A grade meant something then, and students were expected to develop their own self-esteem through meaningful personal achievements.

I’m less interested in where they came from than in how many of the fabulous 54 matriculate to academically challenging four-year colleges and universities. That will tell me what being a valedictorian at NU is really worth. I look forward to Ms. Chargin’s report in the near future.
