Letter spurs undeserved criticism of Earth Song
On The Union’s Ideas & Opinions page on Thursday, we published a letter to the editor from a woman who said somebody left a nasty note on her car, apparently in reaction to her pro-Bush bumper sticker. The letter-writer said the note was written on the back of a receipt from the Earth Song Market and Cafe.
Some readers apparently took that to mean Earth Song had somehow taken part in the creation and distribution of the angry note. The letter in turn led to disgruntled comments being directed toward the Earth Song Market and its staff.
I was to blame for passing the letter along for publication without editing out Earth Song’s name, and for that I apologize to Earth Song employees and customers. Truth is, I failed to anticipate the level of reaction against Earth Song, which obviously neither wrote nor endorsed the note left on the car but, in fact, is a longtime contributor to the Nevada City community.
For customers or potential customers to hold Earth Song responsible for actions it didn’t take would be a shame.
“Earth Song is dedicated to our whole community,” owner Chris Kysar said. “We take extraordinary actions and commitments to provide the best and largest selection of organic products, contribute towards charitable causes, and are an important member of the community. The letter in The Union today is one of divisiveness and exclusiveness, exactly opposite Earth Song’s inclusive and diverse business practices.”
To that, I agree, and regret that the letter to the editor, to some readers, misrepresented this local organic market and restaurant.
