Let’s not celebrate the power of guns

From where I stand, the question this nation so urgently needs to ask itself is not how will we restrict gun ownership but, rather, why do we attach such charisma to the firearm? It seems to me that of all the innovations the human race has developed, the gun is among the most cowardly: it allows killing to be accomplished cleanly, efficiently, and at some remove from the actual injury. And it affords anyone, even the most disturbed and “mentally incompetent,” to become the lord of life and death. Yet it is celebrated everywhere, in theaters and gun shows and television in heroic terms – even as a symbol not of cowardice but of virility and manhood.

Instead of heralding the pistol, the rifle, the AK as an icon of power and prowess, a society with long perspective sees the gun for what it is: a fountain of tears.
