Let’s hear more from reasonable middle

Several people have complimented me on a letter printed on this page a few weeks ago by Dolores Johnson. I didn’t write it; Dolores did, and she deserves the compliments.

I am encouraged by how many sensible citizens are writing in response to the extremist views expressed during and after the last supervisorial campaign. It is frightening to think that some of the people who hold views of conspiracy and global intrigue are actually running for public office. Although efforts will be made to polish up the image of Drew Bedwell and his associates, we have read in this paper a sample of their wild accusations about community organizations and even our schools.

Let’s not let the op-ed page be dominated by hotheads who get their power from spreading rumors and calling names. I’d love to hear more from the “newcomers” who have moved to Nevada County to get away from acrimonious politics and urban sprawl. I’d like to hear from the folks in the middle who prefer intelligence and experience to reactivity and witch-hunting. And I’d like to hear more about how our counties have pulled together to deal with the impact of rapid population growth.

Maybe there’s a board game or paintball shoot-out that the communist infiltration/U.N. plot folks could play while our leaders and volunteer organizations get on with the business of keeping our community a homey and beautiful place to live.
