Let’s do it right

Property owners should pay their fair share for emergency services, but singling out certain residential properties for a 350 percent increase in fees is ridiculous – especially when non-property owners, who use the same emergency services, pay nothing.

Homes with “granny units” face the biggest increase under the new proposal, up from $30 to $133. That’s not right. Wasn’t the original idea behind granny units to create affordable housing for seniors?

Have our fire officials forgotten that home owners with granny units paid an extra fire assessment before they were allowed to build that addition? Have they forgotten the extra requirements like widened driveways and underground water tanks for fire hose hookup that most homes don’t have? Did they consider these mandatory requirements when they set the new assessment at four times the existing rate? It doesn’t sound like it.

I would like to see something where everyone shares in the increased costs, not just property owners. A special sales tax combined with the current assessment is the only fair solution. Asking property owners to carry the whole load is wrong. Let’s do it right. Everyone should pay their fair share and everyone, not just property owners, should get a vote.
