Let’s create a hostel

Anyone who has backpacked through Europe knows the benefits offered the traveler there in the form of an extensive network of hostels. What many do not know is that the United States and Canada also have a significant hostel network. Once called “Youth Hostels,” the system has matured to reflect the wider range in age of those who enjoy traveling less conventionally. American hostels today are more generally known as “International Hostels” (not to be confused with the Elder Hostel program which serves only seniors).

Guest rates at American hostels range from $9 to $28 per night; and as noted in the “Hostelling Handbook,” as well as being safe, they “are friendly and people oriented, filled with others who are looking for the same things you are – adventure, excitement, discovery, and a chance to meet others from around the world.”

The nearest hostel to our beautiful corner of the world is at Sacramento in an 1885 Victorian on H Street.

I would like to meet with others in our community who are interested in exploring possibilities for the creation of an International Hostel here. Call 478-5778.
