Let’s buck rodeos

So, summer is almost here and so is rodeo season.

To me, the major turnoff about any rodeo is that the animals involved are forced participants in events which are frightening as well as physically painful to them. No amount of clever public relations will convince me that being chased, lassoed, thrown to the ground and branded is anything resembling fun for the terrified, stressed-out animals forced into roping events.

And consider this one folks: Why does the bucking bronco buck? For those who don’t know, the answer is that right before the event, a strap is cinched tightly around the flanks of the horse, causing the animal intense discomfort.

What about the children, the youth of America, who attend rodeos? What views about basic human kindness can they be forming as they take part in roping events, goat-tying, pig scrambles – all events based on people forcing their will on animals while conveniently ignoring the animals’ fear and pain.

Please, let’s all take one small step toward the gentler, less violent society we all say we want to live in. Support only humane, nonexploitive forms of entertainment and leave the animals in Penn Valley in peace.
