Let’s abandon ‘jihads’

Recently, you printed a letter that focused on three “jihads” directed against Christians by Muslims. The writer suggested that, based on this, all Muslims are the enemies of Christendom, are “evil,” and ought to be wiped out.

Beginning in 1095 A.D., European Christians sent not three, but nine, crusades into territories from Iberia to the Holy Land, slaughtering uncounted numbers of Muslims, Jews, and fellow Christians. In Jerusalem, these “Christians” herded Jews into synagogues and set them afire. They dashed babies to death against pillars while their mothers watched. You can imagine what happened to the mothers.

By the writer’s logic of tit for tat, the Muslims owe us another six jihads before we’ll be “even.” Please, let’s abandon such fruitless “reasoning” and strive with all our hearts to eliminate the barriers of ignorance and prejudice that divide us. We are members of one human family and are all capable of untold cruelty and limitless love.

“Ye have heard it said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies … do good to them that hate you … That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.” Christ (Matt. 5: 43-45)
