Let all of us vote for each supervisor

Shouldn’t all of us get to vote for each supervisor?

After all, a supervisor doesn’t just represent a town or a region. Each one represents 20 percent of the voting power on the Board of Supervisors. So, irrespective of where they’re from, any three supervisors can determine our future and the county’s future. So shouldn’t we all have a voice in whose these five people are?

This is a conservative county that got blindsided by the elections four years ago when two more “environmentalists” got elected. (The prime reason people live here and move here is because of the environment. We all the love big trees and the blue sky and the clear streams, so I guess we’re all “environmentalists.”)

But the bulk of the people of Nevada County are conservative environmentalists. We don’t like to see $300,000 thrown out the window on a plan (NH 2020) that had the sinister look of a Stealth bomber about to drop its payload on our individual piece of heaven. We don’t want Big Brother telling us what we can or cannot do with our property.

Regarding how conservative the people of Nevada County are, the Nov. 5 election, in which our turnout was over 66 percent, Republicans trounced Democrats in all 11 state and federal offices where we could all vote (see representative example at right).

The average Republican share of the votes was 54.78 percent. The average Democratic share of votes was 35. 58 percent. This was for every office from governor to state assemblyman. Even poor Bill Simon walloped Gray Davis by 51.98 percent to 33.70 percent.

So, you can imagine what the vote would have been for the people running for supervisor had we all been allowed to vote regarding our future. Let’s change the rules so that Nevada County is represented by supervisors who truly represent the great majority for us.
