Leadership lacking on worker housing

Peter Van Zant is at it again, taking credit where it isn’t due. His Oct. 30 op-ed piece is nothing more than a transparent attempt to deflect criticism from his and the other “progressive” supervisors’ lack of progress on work- force housing. He’s using apples as cover for lack of action on oranges.

Mr. Van Zant presents a laundry list of things that the county has done to aid low-income and senior housing, which is laudable, but he gives no evidence of any substantial effort to facilitate housing for young working families. In office for almost six years, he has little to show in this area.

If the “progressives” were serious, they would empower the county staff to find creative ways to make housing projects profitable for the builder to build and remain within reach of purchase by our teachers, deputies, artisans, etc. Reducing costly and unnecessary county-imposed regulations or making exceptions to them, when appropriate, might be a start.

The county staff and the private sector together have the talent and the imagination. The only thing missing is leadership. We can move forward on this important issue without “becoming another Roseville.”
