Kudos – New Music

Music in the Mountains’ Festival included a Concert of New Music on June 23, all from composers living in Nevada County. Terry Riley and Ludi Hinrichs performed their own music with professional skill and verve. Others, like Jay Sydeman and Howard Hersh, were blessed by interpretations of virtuoso performers. David Dvorin incorporated computer effects and Mikail Graham added impressive choreography. The concert finished with an uplifting “Glory Train” by Mark Vance that ranged in texture from near-spiritual to traditional celebratory high-church music. No one who heard this offering of the county’s most creative musicians can fear for the future of new music in this area.
