Foothills Swing Society congratulated for dances

I’d like to congratulate the Foothills Swing Society on their first anniversary of hosting great monthly swing dances.

Last Saturday’s anniversary bash at the Grass Valley Veterans Hall was awesome – from the great Bay Area band (Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums) to the hot swing dance contest, to the enthusiastic turnout of dancers of all ages and experience levels.

We are so lucky to have this group supporting the growing swing community in our area. I’m looking forward to the next Swing Society dance on Dec. 14, St. Joseph’s Hall, from 7-11p.m. Keep up the good work!

Praise for young artists in Music in Mountains fest

Kudos to area young artists Zack Zykowski, violinist, and pianists Jasper Fredrickson, MIriam Becker Drace and Julie Lipson who performed so well Nov. 14 at the Music in the Mountains Fall Fest. Each of these artists has been a finalist and winner of the annual Young Musicians’ Competition, sponsored by Music in the Mountains.

We are indebted to Paul Perry, Artistic Director, for providing these young people a showcase for their talent and an opportunity for our community to be aware of and enjoy such talent.

You are all to be congratulated!

‘It Takes a Village Idiot’

a terrific addition to page

R.L. Crabb, take a bow. Your Saturday cartoon, “It Takes a Village Idiot,” is terrific in every respect: content, clarity, choice of issues, illustration, and most of all humor.

Thank you to The Union for giving your cartoons greater prominence on the page. The Union readership is indeed fortunate to have your creativity and artistry to look forward to each week.

Appreciation for musicians in St. Joseph’s benefit

On Sunday, Nov. 10, Shirley McDonald organized a concert for individual and planetary healing as a benefit for St. Joseph’s Cultural Center. It reminded many of those present of the peace vigil in Nevada City in October. Thanks to all the musicians who took part: Angelika, Kimberly Bass, BigFish, SmallPond (Jim Towsend, Gracie MacKenzie, Michael Powers, Chris Fox, and Jerome Little), and the Crazy Karma Kirtan Band (Robert Kelaghan, Doug Rice, Richard Rodrigue, Diedra Spohler, Janet Leone, and Pial Shapiro). Thanks to Bruce Doan for sound engineering and Leta Sone for decorations. It was a wonderful beautiful evening. Thanks to all of you. Peace.
