Kicking up dust

Wanted: Candidates who are not afraid to ignore the party line and who vote on the issues at hand with their hearts.

I strongly believe in the sanctity of marriage, but don’t really care if it’s of the same-sex variety or not. I’m an advocate of a strong military who questions our lingering presence in Iraq. I’m a devout conservationist who believes it’s hypocritical not to drill our own oil and harvest our own trees.

I support the death penalty, worship a divine being and believe in a woman’s right to choose. I couldn’t shoot a squirrel, but wouldn’t hesitate to harm an intruder entering my home. I’m a fiscal conservative who thinks it’s wrong to have inadequately funded school districts. I’ve criticized our judicial and political system, yet always get a lump in my throat when our flag parades by. I’ve voted for Geraldine Ferarro and Ronald Reagan and enjoy Mendelssohn, Marley, Lou Reed and Bob Wills.

I’m searching for candidates that navigate their idealism down the middle of the political highway. As this presidential race picks up speed, both candidates seem to be consistently kicking up dust as they hug the opposite shoulder, regardless of the issue.
