Keep Lutz open for all our needy ‘Nanas and Grandpas’

Several years ago, I moved my 90-plus year-old grandparents to Nevada City from Buffalo, New York; my grandfather could no longer, all alone, care for his wife of 70 years, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Thanks to the Lutz Center Adult Day Care Services, we all received respite from the continuous demands of physical care and emotional heartache that occur when a family member is afflicted by this disease.

Nana didn’t have a very good grasp on reality, but she always lit up on the days she attended the Lutz Center. She would smile (the old familiar smile) and mistakenly state, “I get to go to church today” or “I am going to bingo today” – the two most peaceful and important events in her hard-working Italian-American life.

Thank you, Lutz Center, for giving my Nana the illusion of familiarity and her family a much-needed break.

As a community, we need to step up to the plate and ensure that the Lutz Center stays open for all our Nanas and Grandpas.
